Sudoku Techniques (Part 6) – Naked Triples and Quads

June 27th, 2009 by martinp

I was very tempted to put Naked Triplets in the title for this post after seeing the traffic that “Naked Pairs” generated. I can’t imagine why there would have been such a boost….I leave that as an exercise for the reader.

Naked Triples  (and quads) is another sudoku technique that will help you clear out the grid on your way to mastery as you learn how to play sudoku. It builds on the idea of naked pairs, where you found just two cells in a house, containing exactly the same two candidates.

Sudoku difficulty in different newspapers

June 26th, 2009 by martinp

Another “miscellaneous” post before we move on. I wanted to give you an indication of what you should be able to do by now, just using the sudoku techniques discussed so far.

I picked up this week’s Sunday Times (UK version) last night. Some of you will know that they publish a “Hard” and a “Very Hard” puzzle every week. This second puzzle is widely regarded as being among the hardest published globally.

Anyway, with just the stuff we have covered up to now, I was able to complete the “Hard” puzzle, using no pencilmarkings (and this is anothe personal challenge). It only needed two naked pairs from what I remember.  I would also expect you to be able to regularly complete a Daily Mail 5-star puzzle without markings in the same way.

Is there anyone who has a feel for how these match up to papers elsewhere in the world? It would be great to try to build up a comparitive list for newspaper sudoku around the world.

Sudoku Techniques (Part 5) – Naked Pairs

Today’s sudoku solving technique came as a revelation to me when I first saw it described. I am aware that I may have been using it unconsciously but it is completely obvious when you see it revealed.

So then, one small step to helping you play sudoku more easily. This is called Naked Pairs. In the same way as we can end up with a naked single, it is possible that we may end up with two cells in a house having exactly the same two values (and no others). You can see this in the grid below.

How am I doing?

A break from the normal frenzied “sudoku solver” programming today. :-)

Before I move on to intermediate sudoku techniques, I wondered if you have found the posts useful so far. I realise that for many of you, these will have been fairly basic – maybe with a few insights.

I would love to hear your opinions on the style of writing, the diagrams, the sudoku naming conventions I have used. In fact, anything at all is up for comment. Blast away, it would be great if we can make this journey together.

Sudoku Techniques (Part 4) Box – Box interactions

June 22nd, 2009 by martinp

The last technique we looked at can be extended slightly as candidates are exposed more clearly across the grid. In fact there are going to be times when we can’t directly find a new given in a box but we can limit the possibilities for our candidates so that they form a new “line” of influence.
